Nutrition and researchers at Valio R&D are responsible for Valio's in-depth nutritional expertise and clinical research on functional products.

They closely track the scientific research related to nutrition and keep abreast of the current discourse. The principal follow-up targets are the positive health effects of milk and milk-based products. Milk protein, fats, calcium, lactose, vitamin D and a variety of health promoting components such as bioactive peptides and probiotic lactic acid bacteria are of particular interest. Nutritional knowledge is utilised in designing the nutritional content of new products. Nutrition experts participate in product development projects, planning and implementing the communication of nutrition information to professional stakeholders.

Another of their key activities is to study the effect of Valio's functional products on volunteer subjects in clinical tests. The focal areas of research concern significant public health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases, overweight and the well-being of the digestive tract. The goal is to develop proven functional products whose inclusion in a varied and balanced diet helps maintain well-being. Studies are planned and implemented working together with the leading Finnish and international experts. Combining product knowledge and technological know-how with the expertise of research physicians and other partners enables the development of new innovative products. In addition to demonstrating product efficacy, it is important to understand the mechanisms behind the effects and these are studied in experimental tests under laboratory conditions.
