Lactobacillus GG

Probiotic promotes well-being
The effective agent of Gefilus® products is the probiotic Lactobacillus GG (L. rhamnosus GG, ATCC 53103 or LGG) lactic acid bacterium. A probiotic is a live microbial preparation that in sufficient doses promotes human or animal health. LGG® is the world's most researched probiotic bacterium and while its health-promoting effect occurs mainly in the digestive tract and the intestines, the result can be seen in the well-being of the whole body. Research groups around the world are drawn to study the health effects of LGG®. Valio and the Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki recently decoded the complete genome sequence or genotype of LGG®. The genotype can be used to study e.g. the mechanisms of health benefits in greater detail.

Lactobacillus GG fulfils all the requirements generally set for effective probiotics:

  • LGG® remains active through the entire digestive tract; it endures gastric acid, bile acid, and conditions otherwise non-beneficial to bacteria.

  • LGG® is adhesive and can adhere to the surface of the intestine where it inhibits the actions of harmful bacteria.

  • LGG® becomes a natural part of intestinal microbiota, balancing it against disturbance.

  • LGG® enhances natural defences by improving the mucosal barrier in the intestine, and modulating the immune response.

  • The first Valio Gefilus® products were launched in Finland in 1990. Today, the product range includes yoghurts, fermented milks, milks, daily dose drinks, juices, berry soups, cheese and capsules.

Valio is licensing the technology and invites applications.
