Possible Russian import ban postponed

15.07.2010

The Russian authorities inspected Finnish meat and dairy industry production plants in May 2010.

On the basis of those inspections, the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselhoznadzor) imposed temporary restrictions on 14 Finnish meat and dairy plants, including six of Valio's in Seinäjoki, Riihimäki, Joensuu, Lapinlahti, Haapavesi and Oulu.

The temporary import restrictions imposed by Russia are set to enter into force on 23rd July 2010.

Deliveries to Russia will continue as normal from other Valio plants in Jyväskylä, Äänekoski, Helsinki, Toholampi, Turenki, Vantaa and Kaitsor, as well as from the Võru and Laeva plants in Estonia.

All Valio production plants meet the strict requirements of EU and Finnish legislation, whereas the grounds for the import ban stem from differences between EU and Russian legislation. Valio will in tandem with the Finnish Food Safety Authority (Evira), and in each production plant affected, investigate the precise reasons for which the ban was imposed.

The goal is to continue exporting Valio products to Russia as per normal after 23rd July 2010, too.
