Valio's first experience of China was in 1987, when the company participated in a co-operation programme between the Finnish government and the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture. Soon after, in 1991, Valio's DEMI 70 became the first Valio product to appear on the Chinese market. In these early days Valio worked through a foreign trading company, before opening a representative office in the heart of Shanghai in January 2001. As of March 2008, Valio's newest subsidiary carries the name Valio Shanghai Ltd.
As consumers of dairy products are concentrated in the major urban centres of Shanghai and Beijing, a campaign is being mounted by the Chinese government to boost dairy consumption nation-wide. Although consumption of dairy products is low in China, averaging only 7.3 kg per person, consumer tastes are rapidly changing - especially among the younger generation. The government project hopes to further change tastes and raise the average level of consumption to 10kg per person by 2005, and upwards of 15kg per person by 2010.
Valio is already known in China for its DEMI powders and has now expanded the product range to include other industrial powders. Valio consumer products such as butter and processed cheese are also on the market.
While Valio's industrial products are used throughout China, the company sells its consumer products only in the big cities of Beijing and Shanghai. Yet as international retailers open branches around the country and as consumer spending power increases, so will Valio grow to meet increased demand.
